Addressing Clinical Challenges in the Diagnosis, Treatment, and Monitoring of ADHD in Children and Adolescents– Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity, but can manifest differently from child to child. The condition is prevalent, occurring in more than 5 million children in the United States between the ages of and 4 and 17, and may negatively impact personal development, academic achievement, and the ability to form and maintain relationships. Because there is no single objective test for diagnosing ADHD, diagnosis can be challenging. In addition, comorbidity is common, with up to 50% of children who have ADHD presenting with at least one comorbidity. Treatment and management of ADHD also presents a challenge. Schedule II stimulants, which were the standard treatment in the past, have been associated with a higher incidence of misuse and abuse, and are being replaced with new agents and different formulations of existing medications.
