Chronic Pain– Pain is the most common reason for seeking medical care. Because chronic (long term) pain can be resistant to many medical treatments and can cause serious problems, people who suffer from chronic pain often turn to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). This fact sheet provides basic information on chronic pain and “what the science says” about the effectiveness of CAM therapies that many people with chronic pain use.
Identify the most prevalent chronic pain diagnoses and conditions that may be associated with them.
Demonstrate knowledge of ‘what the science says’ about the effectiveness of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) approaches that are utilized by many people with chronic pain.
Demonstrate familiarity with the guidelines from the National Clearinghouse of Complementary and Alternative Medicine for guiding people who are considering choosing CAM approaches to help alleviate their chronic pain.
